Shell of cameo during the workmanship and the incision.

The art of the cameo, also called glyptics, is the art of cutting scenes and mythical divinity on stone, shell or other suitable material, and is a very ancient art. The first stage of processing consists in the choice of the chill suitable for engraving. Then it passes the scoppatura, i.e. , to cut the part more convex shell, the "cup"; then it proceeds to the signature and the shaping of the cut piece: inside of the cup you draw the contours of the cameos that we want to find and eliminate, clipping, the unnecessary parts. Finally, it passes to aggarbatura, that consists in giving the piece the desired shape (usually oval or round) using a grinding wheel special. At this point the pieces obtained are fixed on a spindle of wood with hot mastic composed of greek pitch, wax, and canary seed. After this operation it passes to the chipping i.e. the abrasion of the outermost part of the chill in such a way as to leave on the surface layer clear to affect the work then passes to the engraver, which draws on the surface the subject to reproduce. The processing of the cameo has experienced his maximum apex during the Renaissance, today these copies, some of which made and embellished with precious materials, are present in Medici collections or preserved in the most important museums of all over the world.

The shells used for the engraving are:

- The "Sardonic" coming from the Caribbean or the Bahamas, with the bottom brown which makes more clear the incision;
- The "Carnelian" tending toward red, of African origin.

Expertly cut, are transformed into real masterpieces. The Cameo, jewel ancient by the timeless charm, still today is very required. The Neapolitan school is one of the most advanced in the machining of the Cameo, and represents the handicraft expression more prestigious and characteristic of the city of Naples and of the Campania region.
